Here's one of them checking out the "escape hole" in the pre-release cage.......

I almost forgot, this is the end of the story. You'll find the beginning below...
We were working on a job one day, replacing the roof and some rotted soffits......

As we pulled a section of
rotted soffit , out dropped mulitple old bird nests, torn bits of
insulation, dirt, and......................

.....THESE little guys here!
This photo was taken 5 minutes after they fell out of the
overhang. It was an amazing thing to me. Their eyes were open.
They had no teeth. And they were the cuddliest little things to
hold. We stuck them in a small cardboard box and left them there
overnight, thinking their parents might find them, and take them to a
new "home". We'd already covered up the "open" soffit area per the
customer's wishes. The next day, they were still in the box. So I took
them home.

After going on the internet
{what a resource}, we found others who'd already gone through this
experience. We started to feed them a special puppy formula. I
guestimated their age to be about 4-5 weeks based on info gathered from
various internet "squirrell sights.

And we fed them......

....and fed them....
After a few weeks we noticed
they were growing teeth. So we started feeding them Cheerios,
vegetables, fruit, then shelled nuts, then nuts in the shell,

After they began to eat solid "stuff", we began to let them strech their legs a bit.....

When they reached "that age" of independence, we knew we were getting
close to returning them to their natural habitat: our yard, the
neighbor's yard, and all the other places squirrells like to wreak
havoc in.

These squirrels loved, or at least liked, human affection. But after a
while, they definitely matured into creatures who wanted to run wild
and cause trouble.
After reading about the care and release of orphaned squirrells, I
built a "pre-release" cage so that they could get used to the outside
sights and sounds of the wonderfull and dangerous outdoors. It was sad
to see them go, but the female would still jump on my shoulder from
time to time {not an entirely SAFE thing to have happen given the
claws}....and then....they were lost to the neighborhood SQUIRRELL
WORLD.

To those whos sacrifice has made our liberty possible. We live in your shadows.
